Here is something that you should read before you start using Black Byte Free Speech or at least during the free trial period.

If your Black Byte Free Speech has problems connecting or there are some other errors, before you send a support email to info@blackbytenetworks.com try out the following.

Using the right executable of Black Byte Free Speech:

Most important : Use the right executable of Black Byte Free Speech for the right O.S. For instance using the Windows XP executable on Windows Vista or vice versa is going to make Black Byte not work properly. Note that currently the Windows XP executable of Black Byte Free Speech is titled blackbyte-free-speech-1.0.1.xxx-install.exe while the one for Windows Vista is titled blackbyte-free-speech-vista-1.0.1.xxx-install.exe where xxx is the version number.

How to see error logs:

Apart from the messages that appear on the screen, Black Byte Free Speech generates a comprehensive log. To see the log, right click on the Black Byte icon in the system tray, and then press View Log. In any mail that is sent to support, please attach the log messages with it. Also, while attaching the log messages, please attach all messages not just the last one, or the one you think is important. For instance, the first message in the log usually has a version number of Black Byte Free speech with it, and this is extremely important to us to debug. If there are no messages seen by pressing View Log, press Show Status. That also shows current log messages.

Errors and their fixes:

Here are some common errors, and their fixes.

Error:Black Byte Free Speech version 1.0.1.019 does not work properly with Vista when started from the system tray after startup; when looking at the logs, the message "route addition failed" appears.
Solution: After a fresh reboot of the machine, please do not start Black Byte from the system tray; this is a bug from our side which needs to be fixed. Please exit out of Black Byte, to do this, right click on the red icon at the system tray, and press exit out of the choices shown, and then start Black Byte Free Speech again, as per instructions given in running instructions . That is, start it as administrator. This should work. If this does not work, uninstall and reinstall Black Byte, and start it. But never start it from the red icon at the system tray after a reboot. This problem is specific to Black Byte Vista version 1.0.1.019 and will be fixed in the next version.

Error: All Win32-TAP adaptors are busy in this machine.
Solution: Uninstall Black Byte Free Speech and re-install, and run. This should solve this problem.

Error: You are not able to see the black byte icon in the system tray.
Work around: By going to Program files, Black byte, press uninstall for Windows XP or equivalently for Windows Vista. However, when the first uninstall screen comes up, click cancel. This will terminate Black Byte Free Speech application. Then, start Black Byte again by going to Prorgam Files, Black Byte, Black Byte GUI for Windows XP or equivalently run in administrator mode for Windows Vista. The Black Byte icon should now appear in the system tray.

Error messages from the logs:

Sometimes Black byte is connected successfully (the message blackbyte is connected appears) but Black Byte does not work. In such an instance, the first thing to do is to see the logs (see how to view the logs described above).

Here are some known error messages in the logs, and their solutions/ work arounds.

Error Message: Warning: route gateway is ambiguous: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (2 matches. xxx.xxx.xx.xxx above denotes some ip address.
One of the cases in which this error occurs is if you have two routes from your machine to the gateway/router; example is if you have both a wireless connection as well as a wired ethernet connection to your wireless router.
Solution: Make sure there is only one connection from your machine to the gateway/router.

Error message: NOTE: FlushIpNetTable failed on interface [2] {5EA68413-F704
This occurs on Windows XP if Routing and Remote access service is running on your machine. To check if it is so, go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services. Then look for the Remote and Remote Access Service under Name and check for Status. If the service is running, the status should show Started.
Solution: Stop the Routing and Remote Acess service. Again go to the service as shown above, Click on the particular service, then right click and choose Properties, and choose Stop. Also, if automatic is enabled for the service, turn it to Manual.
